Bringing luggage with you

The possibilities for taking luggage differ per train company. On this page you will find an overview of the main rules regarding luggage for all NS Hispeed train services. However, you can also choose to make use of the NS Hispeed luggage service, in cooperation with Flevobird, so that you can travel without luggage.

Intercity direct

Passengers may take 3 items of hand luggage – of which the largest dimension is no more than 85 cm – with them for free. These can be placed in the luggage racks above the seats or between the seats. Prams, skis and completely folded and packed folding bicycles are permitted as long as they fit in the luggage spaces (maximum dimension 120x90 cm). It is not possible to take undismantled or unfolded bicycles, tandems, carts, motorcycles, scooters and other bulky items on board.

Intercity Brussels

Passengers are advised to only take luggage that they can easily carry and that can be placed in the storage spaces provided. Small-sized luggage can be placed in the luggage racks above the seats and there are special spaces between the seats for the larger luggage items.


Each passenger may bring along 2 large pieces of luggage and a single piece of hand luggage. At the end of each carriage, there are luggage racks where you can place larger luggage items. It is not permitted to take tandems and other bulky items with you.

Skis may be taken on board both Ski-Thalys and the regular Thalys, although they must be placed in a protective cover.

Since 1 February 2005, it is mandatory in France that all bags on board Thalys have a label attached containing a passengers first name and surname.


Each passenger may bring 2 large items of luggage and a single piece of hand luggage. At either side of each carriage, there are luggage racks where you can place your luggage. It is not permitted to take tandems and other bulky items with you.

Luggage that is permitted:

  • Travel bags, backpacks, suitcases
  • Folding bicycles (bicycles must be folded and packed)
  • Bicycles with detached front and back wheel, and packed in a case no larger than 120x90 cm
  • Skis
  • Prams (folded)
  • Surfboards (packed, maximum dimensions 120x90 cm)
  • (Electric) wheelchairs (folded)


Besides the luggage permitted to take on board of Eurostar (maximum of 2 medium-sized suitcases of maximum dimension 85cm, and 1 piece of hand luggage) it is possible to transport extra luggage with Eurostar.

Eurostar can transport the extra luggage, as well as bulky items, as registered luggage. Every passenger can register up to 3 pieces of luggage, of which 1 bicycle per person. Registered luggage is only permitted on the following route: Brussels / Paris / Lille - London (and vice versa).
Luggage can be registered at one of the following luggage offices:

  • Brussel Zuid, office 'Bagage', this is located between the Eurostar check-in spot and the Travel Centre, between 07:00 - 22:00 hrs, tel.: +32 22 24 88 62.
  • London St. Pancras, Euro Dispatch Centre, between 07:00 - 22:00 hrs, tel.: +44 8705 850 850.
  • Paris Nord, Sernam, between 07:00 - 22:00 hrs, tel.: +33 1 48 74 14 80.

On the arrival station, luggage can be collected within 24 hours. The cost (to be paid in local currency) are:

  • Large-sized luggage: Bicycles (tandems are not permitted), large musical instruments: €30.00.
  • Suitcases, briefcases and other items of less than 30 kilo: €20.00.

ICE International and IC Berlin

Passengers are advised to only bring luggage that they can easily carry and that can be stored in the spaces provided. Smaller pieces of luggage can be placed in the luggage racks above the seats; for the larger pieces of luggage you may make use of the spaces between the seats that have been specifically designed for this purpose.


Regular sized luggage and winter sports equipment (skis, snowboards, etc.) are transported free of charge. For safety purposes, items such as skis and snowboards should be transported in the luggage compartment of the sleeping coaches. Upon request, these items may be placed in the ‘DeLuxe’ compartments.

Non-regular luggage items (such as boxes, instruments and paintings) are subject to a surcharge of €15.00. This surcharge can be paid on the train.

Luggage Italy

On board of Italian (international) day trains, it is only permitted to take hand luggage. There is a limited space for luggage.

On board of Italian (international) night trains, every passenger is permitted to take one suitcase or travel bag besides a piece of hand luggage. The luggage can be placed in the spaces provided under chairs, beds or other storage areas in the compartment.

How does it work?

If you would like to use this service, you must contact Flevobird at least one week prior to your departure. We will then send luggage labels and a confirmation of the arrangement. Flevobird Luggage Service will collect your luggage one weekday (or more) before departure and deliver it to the chosen address on the agreed upon date (deliveries only on weekdays).
