The signing of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 at Münster and Osnabrück ended the Thirty Years' War and Eighty Years' War and was one of the foundations upon which modern Europe was built. Münster was largely destroyed by Allied air raids during World War II. After the war the city was rebuilt in the original style. Nowadays Münster is known as an artistic city; since 1977 world renowned artists come to the city to present specially created works of art. The "Skulptur Projekte Münster" is one of the most important modern art exhibitions in Germany. Münster is also a very good city for shopping.
