NS Hispeed wants it to be possible for you to continue travelling in an environmentally friendly and comfortable way in the future. Therefore, we support energy efficient travel. This is transportation that gets you where you need to go while still looking out for the environment, people, nature and culture. We contribute to a better environment by improving energy efficiency, further reducing CO2 emissions and being aware of how best to use energy resources.
Travelling does not only contribute to the greenhouse effect but also increases air pollution. The burning of petrol, diesel and kerosene releases harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides and other small polluting particles. These substances degrade the air quality. Research has shown that the high-speed train on the route from Amsterdam to Paris is the greenest method of transportation in comparision to plane and car transportation. Depending on the trip, the (high-speed) train emits roughly seven times less CO2 and other greenhouse gases per passenger than an airplane.
With just a few small adjustments to your lifestyle, you can make a 'green' contribution. You could, for example, choose to travel by (high-speed) train to destinations that are less than 600 kilometres away. And NS Hispeed can be the one to bring you quickly and comfortably to many European destinations.
The EcoChecker is a user-friendly internet tool within the NS Hispeed international train planner. This tool will allow you to compare CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions of your train journey within Europe with that same journey by airplane or car.
Go to the international train planner and fill in your travel details. On the results page you will find the button 'EcoChecker'. Click on this and you will see your travel time, travel directions, route on the map and a graph which compares environmental details of the train, car and airplane.
By using the button 'change your settings' you can change the details of comparison, for example you can select the type of car, number of passengers and/or airport transportation.
The EcoChecker was designed in collaboration with UIC (International Union of Railways), its European members and the IFEU (German energy and environmental research institute).
